In our effort to connect, we are even more disconnected than ever.
As I walked through the airport both on my journey to Costa Rica and coming home, I saw and felt the kleshas in action through one of the most powerful demons of all – our phones. Yes, the smartphone is brilliant. It has cleverly captured the minds, bodies and spirits of our society.
Even as we left one of the most profoundly beautiful gifts God has bestowed on us Costa Rica, people clung to their phone. They buried their attention in a small device, averting human eye contact, fearful that they might miss something, falsely believing that they “have to” or “need to” post, tweet, chat, link or respond. People flocked to the charging stations like junkies getting their fix; they talked about remaining battery life as though it was their own.
“You have 33% left, I’m down to 2%; I need to charge before we get on the plane.” It was as though they were going to completely expire if their phone died.
Mother’s hurriedly charged multiple devices while handing their small child a phone to play with to keep them distracted…so they could “relax”. Play with your child, talk to the person sitting next to you, look someone in the eyes – see what they might be feeling and simply smile or say hello. In our effort to connect, we have become so disconnected. So sad really! No, the world will not fall apart if you detach from your phone.
Unplug, put your phone down, and start living in the present moment because you are missing life. The process and practice of yoga teaches us – gives us this gift of present moment awareness. It gives us vibrant, joyful living. So if you are reading this… you are plugged in to something. Take this as a message from the universe… calling you back to Self.
Are there times when we need to communicate electronically? Yes, of course. My question to you is: How can you detach from your phone and start living life more present?
Yoga is one way. And, I am happy to share the process and practice of living yoga with you…Just join me for a class, workshop, training or retreat. Let me know you read this and you are ready to rejoin the gift of life!
